Frequently asked questions

Which formats can I convert to MP4?

You can input MKV, WebM, and AVI videos as well as GIFs. For MOV files, use the dedicated MOV to MP4 converter.

Can I convert a GIF to MP4?

Yes. The GIF frames are encoded as H.264 video. GIFs have no sound, so the resulting MP4 has no audio track either.

What is the difference between the quality settings?

Standard uses CRF 23, high uses CRF 20, and maximum uses CRF 18. In general, a lower number means better quality and a larger file.

Are subtitles and metadata preserved?

No. Only the first video track and an optional first audio track are output; subtitles, data tracks, and original metadata are not preserved.

Where is my file converted?

Your file is never uploaded anywhere — it is converted inside your browser. A media engine (about 32MB) is downloaded once on first use and cached afterwards.
