Frequently asked questions

What kinds of images convert well?

Images with few colors and crisp edges — logos, icons, and pictograms — convert well. Photos and gradient-heavy images can end up looking very different from the original after the colors are simplified.

Why does the result differ from the original?

Instead of copying the pixels, the colors are reduced to at most 16 and the boundaries of each color region are approximated with curves. That's inherent to automatic tracing — the simpler the shape, the closer the result stays to the original.

Can I convert very large PNGs?

Files up to 25 MiB and 40 million pixels are supported. To keep tracing manageable, images with a longer edge over 2,048px are scaled down proportionally before tracing.

How are transparent PNGs handled?

Transparent areas are traced as a color region of their own, and partial transparency is approximated with opacity values. If the result isn't what you expected, try converting a version with the background filled in.

Are my images sent anywhere?

No. Images are traced right in your browser and never uploaded anywhere. Your files never leave your device.
