Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my file get?

It depends on the image content and your settings. Photos often shrink significantly at quality 80 with no noticeable loss, and lowering the maximum edge length shrinks them further.

Does the quality value compress PNGs too?

No. PNG is a lossless format, so the quality value doesn't apply and it's re-encoded losslessly. To shrink a PNG further, lower the maximum edge length or convert it to WebP.

Can compression ever make my file bigger?

Already-optimized files may not get smaller when re-encoded. In that case you get the original file back unchanged, so the result is never larger than the original.

When should I use the maximum edge length?

Use it when you don't need full resolution, such as for posting on the web. If the longer edge exceeds the value you pick, the image is scaled down proportionally; if it's smaller, the size is left unchanged.

Are my images sent anywhere?

No. Images are compressed right in your browser and never uploaded anywhere. Your files never leave your device.
